What do you need before starting to work with your unconscious?

I’ll begin by explaining the most basic terms that I believe everyone on a spiritual path should be familiar with.

For me, the Jungian structure of the psyche is the most comprehensive and practical description of the human mind that I have come across.

As we can see from the diagram below, there are five main aspects of the psyche shown in the center. All of these aspects are completely normal and necessary parts of our existence here on Earth.

The Persona is our ideal self—the version of ourselves that we present in most social situations. It can sometimes be slightly embellished or inauthentic in order to ensure smoother interactions in different environments.

The Ego is our inner dialogue and what we usually think of as our “real” self. Unlike the Persona, the Ego can contain characteristics that are not typically shown in public—such as selfish desires, manipulative tendencies, aggression, instinctive drives, or intense emotions. In that sense, the Ego is more authentic than the Persona.

For most people, these two—Ego and Persona—are where their inner and outer reality begins and ends. They are the parts of us that are at least partially conscious and known to ourselves.

But sooner or later, something else enters our experience. At first, it usually appears only in brief glimpses. Yet even these glimpses are enough to make you aware of something you don’t fully understand, but which is deeply compelling.

The Self is the deep center of the psyche. It is the unifying force that connects everything, while also being greater than the sum of its parts. It has nothing to do with the Ego and lies completely outside of its control.

If these first encounters with the Self can be dismissed as momentary “misfires” of the brain, things become much more challenging when these experiences last longer. The process of consciously integrating the Self into the structure of the psyche can take years and often triggers intense emotions and existential crises. It can feel like a difficult tension between the small Ego and the vast, almost imperceptible Self. Yet neither can or should be eliminated—both have essential roles within the human psyche.

It is important to become at least somewhat comfortable with the presence of the Self before beginning to explore the Shadow. The Shadow consists of all the experiences and tendencies that the Ego has rejected as unacceptable. A strong Ego is also necessary to keep your practical life relatively stable amid the inner turbulence that Shadow work can bring.

No step on the spiritual path is more important than another. However, it is crucial to honestly assess where you currently stand. This kind of honesty allows you to move forward steadily while minimizing unnecessary suffering.

It is equally important to remember that if you want to go through this process with as little harm as possible, you must proceed slowly. Spiritual growth is like a tree growing—there is no way to make it bear sweet fruit overnight.

Importance of a decision

Spiritual teachings tend to emphasize getting rid of your ego. But the truth is that the Ego will subside and find it's right role by itself when the time is right. In our practical daily lives we do
